01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Dinner at OKANOUE places diners right in front of the teppan griddle, close enough to feel the warmth of dramatic flambé flames and hear the steady sizzle as ingredients cook. Seating centers on counter stools encircling the chef's workspace, alongside quiet private rooms that suit anniversaries, business dinners, and other special occasions.

The centerpieces of the multi-course menus pair top-grade A5 Kuroge Wagyu steaks with pristine seafood. Diners can tailor their courses to personal preference, selecting from flavorful lean cuts like rump, rich sirloin, tender tenderloin, or exceptionally fine-grained, melt-in-the-mouth chateaubriand. Once seared, the beef is served with salt and wasabi, alongside condiments such as fresh green peppercorns and shoyu koji (fermented soy-malt paste), allowing each bite to offer a distinct profile.

Seafood offerings are equally generous. Griddled abalone dressed with aromatic butter soy sauce and a rich liver reduction shares the stage with plump, whole-grilled Japanese spiny lobster. Courses begin on an indulgent note as well, featuring melt-in-the-mouth A5 Kuroge Wagyu nigiri sushi and beef appetizers.

The meal draws to a satisfying close with garlic rice fried fragrant on the teppan, accompanied by dobin mushi, a broth brewed in an earthenware pot to extract the deep essence of beef. After savoring a few forkfuls of the garlic rice on its own, pouring the warm broth over the top in the style of ochazuke is the restaurant's signature custom.

The beverage list ranges from Yebisu draft beer and wines by the glass to distinctive shochu varieties—such as the spice-scented Toyonagakura Cardamom and the lychee-like Kura no Shihon Orange—alongside fresh fruit sours. Located on the 4th floor of a building up Dogenzaka without an exterior street sign, this intimate hideaway is best visited by booking ahead and keeping an eye out for the building's elevator directory.
